Initiative does the business for Wendy
But now a Government initiative has helped the 60-year-old from The Lizard achieve her goal and open her own catering company in Falmouth.
The scheme helps create tailor-made programmes for individuals, organising confidence building sessions, training and working on CVs, interviews and job placements.
Initially Wendy thought little of A4E Pathways to Work, the initiative for people on health-related benefit, saying: "I thought 'here we go again, it's another organisation promising you they will help you to achieve your goal' and I thought it was going to be a waste of time.
"I was wrong. I have had lots of help, not only from them, but they put me in touch with other organisations which had led me to go on several courses. They have been really helpful and have given me a better outlook on my life."
Tickleyertastebuds has opened at Bickland Business Centre, and Wendy, with help from her husband Noel, provides buffets for businesses, weddings and other functions, as well as celebration cakes, and plans to branch out with a delivery van.
"Without A4E and all the other agencies helping me get my confidence and self-esteem back, I would be sitting back and my goals would be dreams, not reality. I had been suffering with depression, my self esteem and confidence was very, very low. I knew what I wanted to do, but I just could not be bothered. I feel so good about what I have achieved."
Wendy, who lives at Ruan Minor, worked in catering before her depression, but was made redundant from her last job when the company closed.
