PICTURES: Prince Andrew today addressed hundreds of young people and employers in the county and emphasised the importance of apprenticeships as a route into the workplace.
His Royal Highness, the Duke of York, delivered a passionate speech to a large crowd at Gloucestershire College’s Launchpad vocational centre in Tewkesbury and also praised the role of the local media.
His visit at the centre, on Tewkesbury Business Park, marked the launch of the Gloucestershire Echo and Gloucester Citizen’s Apprenticeship Awards 2014, which has Gloucestershire College and The Warranty Group as title sponsors.
He described the event as “absolutely outstanding” as he met catering, hair and beauty, engineering and construction apprentices.
“Local Media are in touch with what is going on and they know the right thing to do. I would commend their role in helping businesses to flourish,” the Duke said.
“Young people need to understand as much as they possibly can what the pathways are into the working world.
“The other part of this is to recognise what people are achieving in the world of apprenticeships.”
Budding hairdresser Lisa-Marie Barr was one of a group who were practicing their skills on dolls with real hair and who spoke to the Duke.
The 16-year-old said: “We practice on each other as well and this helps us know what to do so we are ready for the industry.”
Matthew Burgess, Gloucestershire College principal and chief executive, said the Duke’s visit was “fantastic” for the college and its apprentices.
“This is a good advert for the business community and to the county. He seemed very informed and I know he is very passionate about apprentices. He was interested in how young people had made their choice into apprenticeships.”
The apprenticeship awards are now in their third year with 12 categories. Gloucestershire College and The Warranty Group are the title sponsors.
They culminate in an awards evening at Hatherley Manor Hotel in June 12.
