Pupils and teachers at Dean Close Prep School in Cheltenham are celebrating the much-awaited opening of a £4.5 million hall.

The ribbon has been cut on the new drama, music and teaching block, which faces on to Lansdown Road, after a 14-month construction period.

It includes a 350-seat theatre with state-of-the-art retractable seating.

Headteacher Leonard Browne said the building, which replaces the old Langhorne Hall, was a magnificent addition to the school.

And he praised the vision of architects who took the ideas of staff to come up with the designs.

"We are very fortunate to have such an impressive building, and we are enjoying putting it to good use," he said.

"Without exception everyone who has visited has been overwhelmed at what they have seen.

"While it is the pupils time and time again who make a school what it is, there is no doubt that a facility like this adds hugely to their learning experience."

The building will house school assemblies and exams from now on.

Teachers say the nearby drama rooms make it one of the best-equipped prep school drama departments in the country.

The theatre’s retractable seating will allow the space to be to put to good use, hosting anything from major drama productions to informal social events.

Eight music practice rooms form part of a linkage through to a refurbished music school, and the modern classrooms, including a new IT suite complete the teaching facilities.

At the front of the new building there is an atrium and formal reception area where parents and visitors can be welcomed into the school.

Leaders at the school said excitement generated by the new building had led to a surge of calls to its admissions department since it opened three weeks ago.

Mr Browne added: "It is a clear statement of the kind of education we are offering to enable our boys and girls to become the people they are meant to be."
