27 jobs under threat at drinks firm

UP TO 27 jobs are at risk at a specialist drink wholesaler after management decided to restructure the business.

WaverleyTBS has announced proposals to restructure its logistics network and to centralise telesales and support functions.

The firm, a subsidiary of beer giant Heineken, employs 1,300 staff at 20 depots around the country including 27 in Paignton's Aspen Way.

Bosses at the firm want to slash some 15 per cent of the national workforce.

The company said the proposals had been made in response to an ongoing review of the business and against the backdrop of economically challenging conditions.

Jonathan Townsend, managing director, WaverleyTBS confirmed some roles may have to go at the Paignton site as a result of the restructuring.

He said: "Every effort will be made to seek alternative employment for those affected, including outplacement support, retraining and/or redeployment where suitable alternative employment exists.

"These have been difficult decisions to make and none of them have been entered into lightly.

"The outcome of the review in no way reflects on the performance of affected colleagues who have done an excellent job over the last few years in a very challenging market.

"It is well documented that the drinks sector continues to face some considerable challenges and our business has to evolve to remain sustainable and competitive."

WaverleyTBS distributes beer, spirits and wines to pubs throughout Devon.

A company spokeswoman said the staff review would not affect business and customers in the county would still be supplied.

A consultation period has now been launched with staff in all branches.

The WaverleyTBS spokeswoman said: "Until this consultation has been completed, we are unable to confirm the exact number of jobs affected by this announcement.

"All affected employees will be fully supported through this period of change."
