Winning Bristol and Bath Women in Business Award kick-started 'whirlwind' year

Winning a Bristol and Bath Women in Business Award this year kicked off a “whirlwind” of positive news for Ellen Green.

The owner of the Blue Badge Company picked up the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and hasn’t looked back since.

Ellen first began helping her friend Camilla, a Blue Badge holder, to hand stitch a series of stylish wallets specially designed to hold disabled parking permits for a new company.

Now, aged just 30, Ellen is sole director of the fast growing Blue Badge Company and one of the country’s most dynamic young female entrepreneurs.

She told the Bath Chronicle: “Winning the award was the start of a whirlwind of good things getting the Blue Badge name out there.

“I subsequently appeared on Dragon’s Den and in August I went on Woman’s Hour on Radio 4.

“It was very nice to get that recognition at what was the start of a very special year for us.”

Under Ellen’s leadership, Blue Badge Company has sold more than 100,000 of its wallets across the UK and extended its range to include walking stick bags, lap trays and wheat warmers.

She said of the Bristol and Bath Women in Business Awards ceremony in March, where she is pictured at the top of the page receiving her award (left), “I had a brilliant evening, it was really lovely.

“One of the best things for me about it was the networking and meeting people there.

“I made some lifelong friends that night. Being surrounded by other successful women, with the camaraderie that brought as well, was just the best thing.”

This year there are new categories for home-based businesses and outstanding leadership and management within an organisation.

Ellen, who runs Blue Badge out of Montpelier in Bristol, added: “I would 100 per cent encourage other women to enter. It is a great opportunity to get the business name out there.

“I feel like the awards, even though they have not been going that long, have become really well recognised over a short period of time which is very impressive.”
