Award-winning Bath curry house Rajpoot is closing after 36 years

One of Bath's best curry houses is closing after 36 years.

Rajpoot in Argyle Street has been serving up Indian and Bengali cuisine in Bath since 1980 but owner Ahmed Chowdhury has decided it's time for a change.

The popular restaurant has received numerous awards including South West Restaurant of the Year 2015 at the Annual England Curry Awards. It also made the Daily Telegraph's guide for Britain's 20 best curry houses in 2016.

Mr Chowdhury is closing Rajpoot because he is ready to retire.

He said: "The Rajpoot opened on September 10, 1980 and we have been trading for more than 36 years.

"Before we opened, people used to consider a curry restaurant as somewhere to go when the pub closes.

"Our aim was to do something different and overnight we became one of the best Indian restaurants in the country."

Mr Chowdhury said there are two reasons why he is closing.

"I'm tired and I want to retire. And there is also this issue of staff shortages," he said.

"There are more than 30,000 vacancies within Indian restaurants in the UK at the moment. Restaurants are closing down and we are not getting support from the Government.

"If you are to run a top quality restaurant, you need good staff and we cannot bring anybody from the Indian subcontinent and second generation people here don't want to work in restaurants."

He added: "It is a very painful and sad time. We really are a Bath institution.

"We have had a very successful 36 years because of tremendous customer support and amazing encouragement from other Bath businesses.

"Some people grew up with the Rajpoot. We have 36 years of community stories in our restaurant."

Mr Chowdhury hopes to enjoy his retirement and concentrate on his community work in the New Year.

Rajpoot will close on Saturday, December 24.
