Major Bath tyre retailer employing 200 people sold for more than £10 million

One of the largest family-owned tyre retailers in the South West which employs 200 people has been bought for more than £10 million.

Wayne and Sarah Clifford sold Bath-based Bathwick Tyres and its 31 sites across the South West and South Wales, after 40 years.

Mr Clifford said it was “time to go” after selling the business, which specialises in tyres and vehicle maintenance, to Micheldever Tyre Services.

He will now turn his attention to property, which he owns on the sites, plus maintaining grounds in Corsham, where his wife owns a stud.

Mr Clifford said: “It’s time to go, we’ve done exactly 40 years. I’m lucky enough I still own all the properties, so we still have an interest.

“The sale was into the double millions. I respect them (Micheldever) because they’re an expanding business.”

He added he would be holding a party for staff on June 9 in Bath.

The purchase brings the Micheldever-owned Protyre network to 143 UK centres. Micheldever is the UK's second largest tyre distributor and it is owned by Sumitomo Rubber Industries, the world’s sixth largest tyre manufacturer.

Clarissa Hearn, of Micheldever, said the network would welcome Bathwick Tyres’ 200 staff and the move was part of its growth strategy.

She said: "The acquisition adds to Protyre’s consistent strategy of growing by acquisition increasing the Protyre network to 143 centres with an expectation of hitting 150 by the end of the year.

"We would like to welcome the 200 new colleagues who have joined the company and are delighted that they will be part of the Protyre and Micheldever family.”

Bristol-based law firm, Roxburgh Milkins, provided corporate law advice to the Bathwick shareholders throughout the process.

The firm also assisted in the sale of Nailsea-based Coombe Garage Tyres, then owned by Nigel and Jan Wedlake, to Micheldever last year.

Bruce Roxburgh, partner and founder of Roxburgh Milkins, said: “We are delighted to have been able to help Wayne and Sarah Clifford secure a deal which sees Bathwick Tyres join Micheldever.

“Since helping Nailsea-based Coombe Garage Tyres sell to Micheldever last year, it’s great to see that more South West success has been recognised by Protyre and for them to look to build on the excellent work started by Wayne and Sarah”.
