South West contracts for Hinkley Point C top £1.3billion

South West companies have won contracts with the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset worth more than £1.3billion.

More than £650million has already been spent with the region’s businesses and the project is creating opportunities for companies and workers, as well as reinvigorating UK industry, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has said.

The South West is set to benefit by £200million each year during peak construction, according to a BEIS report, with £4billion being generated for the regional economy over the lifetime of the project.

Minister for business and industry Richard Harrington MP said: "“Hinkley Point C will be pivotal in providing clean energy for the future, as well as creating high-skilled, well paid jobs right now in the South West.

“As we outlined in our recent landmark nuclear sector deal, Hinkley Point C will create over 25,000 job opportunities over the construction period, as well as employing 900 people over its 60-year lifespan.”

More than 80 per cent of the contracts for the power station have already been awarded, with the project estimated to spend 64 per cent of the construction value of Hinkley Point C with UK-based companies..

Nigel Cann, Hinkley Point C delivery director, says South West firms have “worked hard” to win contracts and meet the high standards of safety, quality and efficiency required on the project.

He said: “They have been real pioneers and shown ambition and determination. Their experience provides a lesson for other regions to follow.”
