Solar project award win shines light on Cathedral project

Solar panel specialists Mypower saw its name in lights after winning a national award for its ground-breaking work at Gloucester Cathedral.

The 1,000-year-old landmark – location for three ‘Harry Potter’ films – became the oldest cathedral in the world to have a solar panel system on its roof after Cheltenham-based Mypower installed the hi-tech equipment last autumn.

The 150 solar panels fitted by Mypower will save the cathedral nearly £200,000 in energy costs over the next 25 years and generate enough energy to power seven semi-detached houses for a year.

Now, Mypower has gained national recognition for the work by winning the Highly Commended title in the Project Award category at the coveted British Renewable Energy Awards at The Savoy Hotel, London.

Mypower, based in Toddington, just outside Cheltenham, were praised by the panel of judges for their attention to detail, careful planning and sensitivity towards such an important and historic building.

Ben Harrison, who heads up Mypower, said: “I'm very proud of what we have achieved at Gloucester Cathedral and being recognised at the awards is the icing on the cake.

“To be only narrowly beaten by British Solar Renewables with the largest ground installation in the UK – 2,000 times bigger than our project – is some achievement for a small business like ours.

“Whilst it is our name on the award, it really should be for the whole project team at Gloucester Cathedral, the Heritage Lottery Fund, all those who sponsored a solar panel and everyone else who played their part in creating history, especially cathedral architect Antony Feltham-King of St Ann’s Gate Architects who spent almost five years on the project.”

Mypower, which specialises in solar PV for agricultural and commercial solar panel clients, also finished runner-up at the South West Energy Efficiency Awards in Exeter and highly commended in the Small Scale Project of the Year and Solar PV Installer of the Year categories.

It also picked up the CorporateLiveWire 2017 award for Excellence in Commercial Solar Energy Solutions.
