Probably the world’s leading engineer experts in landing gear for aircrafts touched down at a Gloucestershire school this week.

Usually helping design, make and service the landing gear for the world’s major aircrafts, staff from Safran arrived at Gotherington Primary School to help spread a little magic about the world of engineering.

The visit was part of the Staverton-based French-owned engineering firm’s involvement in the Future Apprentice campaign which seeks to inspire and promote the opportunities available in the county by partnering business with schools.

Pupils at the school, just north of Cheltenham, turned their hands to building model landing gear themselves and learned about the life of an engineering working for a world-wide firm in the exciting world of aerospace.

“We were particularly pleased this week to visit Gotherington Primary school to tell them something about engineering, the landing gear Safran produce and to test their assembly skills on some mini landing gears, building them against the clock, certainly a few future engineers amongst the class,” said Peter Hall, a spokesman for Safran.

Ms Khan, the teacher in charge on the day, said: “We were delighted to get a visit from Safran. The children were very inspired and worked well in teams to build landing gear models. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session.”

Safran Landing Systems is described as a world leader in the design, development, manufacture and in-service support of aircraft landing systems.

The company supplies innovative landing gear solutions to 30 leading commercial, military, business and regional aircraft manufactures and supports more than 27,000 aircraft in-service, with close to 900 airlines, making over 54,000 landings every day.

“The availability and continuous development of skilled members of the team is the life blood of the business and vital in meeting our goal of growing market share and maintaining our world leadership position in landing gear and we do this through our apprenticeship, graduate and MSc schemes.

“Our apprenticeship scheme offers a range of opportunities for individuals to develop their careers not only in engineering, but also in a variety of functions throughout the business as part of a structured and nationally recognised program.

“In addition to their career development apprentices are encouraged to participate in STEM type activities for the company as part of their personal development.

“Such activities include visits to schools as ambassadors for the business, encouraging younger school pupils to consider careers in engineering and the training opportunities available to them.”
