900-plus jobs to go at Lloyds Banking Group

More than 900 jobs are under threat at Lloyds banking Group – which has its Lloyds TSB Mortgages centre in Gloucestershire - according to reports.

It is believed the affected staff were told at the end of January with the bank planning to re-deploy staff wherever possible.

Lloyds confirmed it would be looking for voluntary redundancies to achieve the staff reduction and that job losses would partly be offset by the creation of 465 new roles.

How many staff may be affected in Gloucestershire is not yet known. The bank has branches in Bristol Road, Eastgate Street, Gloucester, in Bath Road, High Street and Bishops Cleeve in Cheltenham, in Stow-on-the-Wold, in Stroud at Rowcroft, Castle STreet in Cirencester, and high street in Tewkesbury.

The banking giant announced on the eve of Christmas last year it planned to cut 49 branches because customers were increasingly banking online. That included its Halifax and Royal Bank of Scotland sites.

It is understood both the deepest cuts and the highest number of jobs created will be in the commercial banking and information divisions.

The news comes as chief executive António Horta-Osório prepares to out his new three-year strategy, expected later this month.

Unite, which is still waiting to hear the detail of the plans, said Lloyds had cut more than 50,000 posts since the financial crisis.
